Jupiter (The Hierophant) - Poster

Most people picture a pope here: triple crown, hand raised in benediction, two tonsured monks kneeling below and the keys of heaven at his feet. This deck has no pope. In his place stands Jupiter, near naked on a bank of cloud with a thunderbolt in each hand and his eagle in the clouds beneath him. He and Junon are the pair that replaced the Pope and the Papess, and they are what the Besançon pattern is named for. The cartouche spells it JVPITER, V for U, as the period lettering does. He reads in the Pape's place: the one people bring the question to, whether or not he has the answer.

This print is hand-vectored from an 1891 French chromolithograph in the Besançon pattern, the variant that replaces the Papess and the Pope with Junon and Jupiter. Every line is redrawn by hand. No auto-trace, no AI, no upscaling — the irregularities of the original press are kept where they belong and the color is matched to the antique sheet rather than modernized.
