L'Empereur (The Emperor) - Poster

The familiar Emperor sits bolt upright and face-on, armored beneath his robes, hemmed in by bare mountains. This one will not look at you. He is seated in profile with one leg crossed over the other, leaning on his throne rather than filling it, the imperial eagle at his feet. Note the numeral: IIII, not IV. The older French decks counted that way, and this reproduction keeps it. The fixed point everything else gets arranged around, for better and for worse.

This print is hand-vectored from an 1891 French chromolithograph in the Besançon pattern, the variant that replaces the Papess and the Pope with Junon and Jupiter. Every line is redrawn by hand.
