Most people picture the Fool as a sunlit figure at a cliff's edge, white rose in hand, a small dog dancing at his heels. That image is barely a century old. The older French tradition is sharper: Le Mat is a jester, a figure of open mockery, and the dog at his legs is not celebrating him; it is tearing at his clothes. He carries no number, which is the whole point: the leap taken before you feel ready.

This print is hand-vectored from an 1891 French chromolithograph in the Besançon pattern, the variant that replaces the Papess and the Pope with Junon and Jupiter. Every line is redrawn by hand.
