Most people picture the Magician as a robed adept, one hand raised to heaven, the four elemental tools laid out before him. That reading is barely a century old. Look at what is actually on this table: two cups, a scatter of pellets, a blade, a coin. Le Bateleur is a mountebank, a fairground sleight-of-hand man, and those are the props of a cups-and-balls routine. The altar came later. Everything he needs is already on the table, which is either encouraging or accusing depending on the day.

This print is hand-vectored from an 1891 French chromolithograph in the Besançon pattern, the variant that replaces the Papess and the Pope with Junon and Jupiter. Every line is redrawn by hand. No auto-trace, no AI, no upscaling — the irregularities of the original press are kept where they belong and the color is matched to the antique sheet rather than modernized.
